We have noticed that many of our clients and even our staff, is complaining of severely dry - dehydrated skin. It is a common factor that comes along with winter weather.

Did you know that there is an actual difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

“Dry skin is an imbalance in the body that causes the skin to lack essential oils. It can be caused by the absence or malfunction of sweat or sebaceous glands,” explains Scott-Vincent Borba, celebrity esthetician, in New Beauty.

“Dehydrated skin is skin that’s been stripped of moisture. It can be aggravated by an improper diet, a dry climate, sun, wind, and heat, not drinking enough water, certain medications and stripping skin-care products − as well as the aging process.”

Who would have known that there is a real difference?

Here are a few tips to help infuse moisture and hydration back into the skin for a glowing, fresh look.

1. Drink Water: The average human body is made up of 60%-75% of water, and we often forget to replenish it. We should be drinking 8 glasses of water a day, are you??

2. Exfoliate: Use an exfoliating scrub in the shower 2 to 3 times a week to help exfoliate the dry skin off of the epidermis. Your makeup will apply better and skin care products will hydrate deeper!

3. Strengthen the skin: Use a good Medical grade skin care regimen. From antioxidant active rich cremes to nourishing peptides, your skin needs certain "boosts" to help strengthen your immunity to everyday

harsh free radicals.

4. Sunscreen: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Wear it all day, everyday - there really is nothing more to say!

5. Remember to hydrate at night: Cleansing your skin is just as important at the end of the day as it is at night. This Fall/ Holiday Season at Sanctuary Spa we are collecting for the Military. We are not just gathering items for one specific branch, sex or stationed location, but for ALL who fight for our rights. These selfless and driven individuals deserve recognition and the least we can do is send a sweet something their way.

We all are in this together. We all are fighting for something. It just happens that some have less than others. We hope to help those who are in need of a better day, get one, even if only for a few minutes.

Remembering Those Lost 9/11 Forever in Our Heart

Ten years later, many Americans still remember clearly the unfolding of horrible events on Sept. 11, 2001. Planes flying into the World Trade Center; people jumping out of windows more than 100 stories high; thousands of civilians fleeing out of downtown Manhattan by foot. These kinds of images are hard to forget.

On the other hand, most people who were glued to the news for days in 2001 now think only rarely about that horrifying day. And people who were far from the scene or who were very young at the time may not know many details about the terrorist attacks at all.

It is a classic phenomenon that has happened again and again over years of war and trauma, historians say. In the midst of tragic events, people are sure that the world will never be the same again. But as years and generations pass, daily life goes back to normal for most people. Meanwhile, political and cultural influences gradually morph our memories of history for decades to come.

For now, as conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, it is too soon to know how 9/11 will be remembered or even if future generations will always commemorate the date.

Dysport or Botox?

Dysport was FDA-approved for use in the US in 2009. Dysport was originally to be marketed in the US under the name "Reloxin", but the FDA decided that the original name should be used and did not allow the new name.

Dysport and Botox are made by different companies, but they have the same basic structure and they work in the same way. There are some slight differences between the two:

1. Dysport "kicks in" a little more quickly than Botox. Botox usually takes effect after 5-7 days, while Dysport's effects are noticable as early as 1-2 days after treatment.

2. Dysport and Botox "units" are not the same, so you can't expect to use the same number of Dysport units that you are used to using in Botox units.

3. Dysport lasts at least as long as Botox does (3-4 months)

Sanctuary Spa is doing their part! We are taking donations for the victims of Hurricane Irene in Schoharie County, NY. FEMA has declared this area a major disaster.

Tropical Storm Irene put a $1 billion whipping on New York, most of it upstate where heavy rains spawned flash floods that shredded roads, washed out bridges and knocked buildings from their foundations, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday. The storm caused $45 million in damage to farms, authorities said, and as of Wednesday morning, about 329,000 customers were still without power statewide.

Here at Sanctuary Spa we are proud to be New Yorkers. Our beloved, Samantha (esthetician) is from Schoharie county and truly has been devastated by the demise of the beautiful place she grew up in.

We will take whatever you can spare: clothes, canned food, paper products. All donations are graciously accepted and with gratitude we will distribute them to people in need.

Isotonix, Day One!

Isotonix has a state-of-the-art isotonic delivery system to maximize absorption of your supplements. AHHHHH. So, FALL has finally arrived. It was just this morning that I walked into the spa and smelled an unfamiliar, yet lovely new scent in the air. No, it wasn't that crispy cool, farm- fresh chilled fall air... it was more soothing and sensual - relaxing my body and taking away my stress as soon as I entered through the door. That's right, the smell of lavender was wafting in the lobby just waiting to penetrate my nose as I made way to my desk. Wondering what this new smell was - I glance to my right and I see these new furry little friends, a poodle, monkey and soft fuzzy blankets ( just calling my name to come cuddle and love). What a wonderful way to start off my day - although I'm sure my boss wont think so - I think I'm so at peace I might just have to take a break rejuvenate my mind in our relaxation room . Oprah, Rachel Ray, and Martha all seem to be powerful women of influence these days. It's like everywhere you go - you see their product lines, smell their favorite scents, read their favorite books. Well, to be quite honest, here at the Sanctuary Spa of Saratoga Springs, we'd never thought we'd have SO much in common with the who's who in America. As Debra Docyk, the CEO of our spa was casually glancing through Martha Stewart's Living Mag she unexpectedly turned the page to see Yonka Lotion highlighted as Martha's pick of the Month. It was a very unique moment for Deb because she literally had placed the Yonka product in front of my desk not a day before saying this truly is a great sale for the month of March. She proceed to exclaim how hydrating, nourishing and not to mention how great smelling the toner was. Here we are, just two years old and blooming beautifully into our own. Yes, that's right, the Sanctuary Spa of Saratoga Springs has just celebrated our second birthday here in the Spa City.
